Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated Structural Dynamics & Vibro-Acoustic Simulation Engineering Intern / Co-op student currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or a related field to support the development of advanced modeling strategies for structural dynamics applications and their integration with Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) methodologies.
The selected candidate will work on the development and validation of analytical and semi-analytical modeling strategies for structural dynamics and vibro-acoustic applications, with emphasis on complex built-up structures such as multilayer composite and laminate visco-elastic panels. The candidate will perform validation of the developed methodologies and simulation strategies using finite element and boundary element analysis (FEA/BEA) tools. The role includes vibro-acoustic modeling, fluid-structure interaction studies, and analysis of acoustic performance metrics such as transmission loss and near-field acoustic prediction using concepts related to panel directivity and acoustic radiation behavior. The position offers hands-on experience in structural dynamics, vibro-acoustics, numerical simulation, and engineering software development.
The candidate will collaborate closely on research and development activities involving finite element modeling, dynamic response analysis, and the validation of new simulation and modeling approaches.
Key Responsibilities:
Structural Dynamics & Simulation Focus
- Develop and evaluate modeling strategies for structural dynamics applications with relevance to Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA).
- Build, modify, and analyze finite element models using commercial solvers such as Nastran or OptiStruct.
- Create and refine pre-processing and meshing workflows using tools such as Femap or HyperMesh.
- Perform dynamic analyses including modal, frequency response, and vibro-acoustic simulations.
- Validate developed methodologies through finite element and boundary element simulations and comparison of numerical results.
- Support the automation of simulation workflows and data processing using programming and scripting tools.
- Collaborate on the development of custom simulation utilities and computational tools using languages such as Python, C++, FORTRAN, or Compose.
- Document methodologies, simulation procedures, and technical findings clearly and professionally.
Requirements:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Physics, or a related field. Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
- Comfortable working in a fully remote environment in the US.
- Strong background in structural dynamics, vibrations, or statistical Energy Analysis.
- Familiarity with finite element simulation workflows and CAE tools such as:
- Nastran
- OptiStruct
- Simcenter Femap
- HyperMesh
- or similar software
- Understanding of modal analysis, dynamic response analysis, vibro-acoustic simulation concepts, and fluid-structure interaction fundamentals.
- Programming experience in one or more of the following languages:
- Python
- C++
- FORTRAN
- Compose
- MATLAB or similar scripting environments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research and development environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) or vibro-acoustic analysis methods.
- Experience interpreting and validating structural dynamic and vibro-acoustic simulation results.
- Experience with programming, scripting and simulation automation.
